Hale Mauโu, meaning โHouse in the Grass,โ is a stunning architectural retreat on Hawaiiโs Big Island designed by Walker Warner Architects with interiors by Catherine Kwong Design. Set on a sweeping volcanic plain edged by mountain and ocean vistas, the project embraces its dramatic natural context through thoughtful siting and a series of clustered volumes that feel both intimate and expansive. The nearly 5,000-square-foot residence is arranged around a central grassy courtyard, traversed by a raised boardwalk that connects a sequence of low, village-like structures. Copper-clad roofs with broad eaves respond to the tropical climate while offering shade and sculptural form. Large barn-style wooden doors blur the line between inside and out, allowing occupants to fully experience Hawaiiโs trade winds, light, and landscape. Walker Warner+1
