For the first time, two projects by Henning Larsen have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award (EUMies Awards) — Europe’s most prestigious recognition for architectural excellence.
The nominees, World of Volvo in Sweden and the New Children and Youth Hospital in Norway, showcase the studio’s commitment to human-centered, sustainable design that harmonizes people, place, and purpose.
Opened in 2024 in Gothenburg, World of Volvo was designed for Volvo Cars and Volvo Group as an immersive experience center celebrating Scandinavian values of openness, connection to nature, and freedom of movement. Its 22,000 m² timber structure, supported by three tree-like columns, forms a vast canopy inviting visitors to explore Volvo’s heritage and vision for the future.
The New Children and Youth Hospital in Bergen focuses on the mental and physical well-being of young patients. Carefully scaled along the hillside, the hospital maximizes daylight, outdoor access, and playful elements in the healing environment. A central garden, intuitive wayfinding, and age-inclusive spaces create a warm, human-centered experience for patients and families alike.
This dual nomination adds to Henning Larsen’s celebrated legacy, including the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík, which won the Mies Award in 2013, and past nominations for Moesgaard Museum, Umeå Art Museum, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, and Uppsala Concert & Congress Hall.
A heartfelt thank you to the jury and collaborators for making these visionary projects possible. Winners will be announced in April 2026.
