CTBUH Asia Conference 2025 Highlights: Mumbai’s Moment in Vertical Urbanism

The CTBUH Asia Conference 2025 concluded in Mumbai as a landmark event for the global built environment, underscoring India’s rising influence in shaping the future of high-density cities. Hosted by the newly rebranded Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU), the conference brought together over 600 architects, planners, developers, and policymakers, reflecting both Mumbai’s growing global stature and the strong momentum of India’s real estate and infrastructure sector.

    Humanising Vertical Urbanism

Centred on the theme “Humanising Vertical Urbanism”, the conference explored how cities can balance density with emotion, inclusivity, and well-being. Discussions focused on rethinking vertical development not merely as a response to population pressure, but as an opportunity to create humane, meaningful urban experiences that support social connection and mental health.

    Thought Leadership and Key Perspectives

One of the most impactful moments came from Caroline Bos, Co-Founder and Principal Urban Planner at UNStudio (UNS), who challenged conventional thinking by asking, “Are cities emotional landscapes?” Her address highlighted the role of architecture and planning in shaping emotional responses, emphasising that urban environments must resonate with human experience rather than function solely as infrastructure.

    Project Showcase: Karle Town Centre

UNStudio also presented its vision for Karle Town Centre, a mixed-use high-rise district designed around identity, inclusivity, and emotional engagement. The project demonstrated how thoughtful programming, strong branding, and market-sensitive design can balance density with humanity, offering a compelling model for future vertical developments in rapidly urbanising regions.

    Strategic Significance and Global Outlook

The conference marked a significant institutional milestone with the official transition from CTBUH to the Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU), signalling an expanded mandate beyond tall buildings toward holistic urban systems. Announcements of upcoming CVU events in Jakarta and Riyadh/Dubai further reinforced the organisation’s growing global reach and strategic focus on emerging urban centres.

    Conclusion

With global design and development leaders converging in Mumbai, the CTBUH Asia Conference 2025 reaffirmed the city’s role as a critical voice in the evolution of vertical urbanism. The event positioned Mumbai—and India more broadly—as a laboratory for human-centric, high-density urban futures, where scale, emotion, and innovation increasingly converge.
