The Acre Reaches Practical Completion: A Landmark in Sustainable Refurbishment

The Acre has officially reached practical completion, marking a major milestone in the transformation of Richard Seifert’s renowned 1980s structure. With the first occupants set to move in soon, the project stands as a testament to innovation, sustainability, and the value of adaptive reuse in modern architecture.

Led by Northwood Investors LLC and development manager Platform, in collaboration with Arup and Gensler, the refurbishment journey — from September 2021 to November 2024 — reflects a forward-thinking approach to sustainable design. By retaining 80% of the original structure, the team achieved a 50% reduction in embodied carbon emissions, saving approximately 4,850 tonnes of CO₂ compared to typical new-build projects.

This saving is equivalent to the lifetime emissions of nearly 1,000 UK citizens, reinforcing The Acre’s credentials as a net-zero, all-electric development powered by renewable energy sources.

The project exemplifies how thoughtful design and engineering can preserve architectural heritage while meeting the environmental demands of the future.
