HDR, Inc. has announced a major milestone for the Smith Canal Gate project, delivered in close partnership with the San Joaquin Area Flood Control Agency.
Critical Milestone During January Storm
During a January storm event, the Smith Canal Gate completed its first successful operational test—marking a significant advancement in strengthening long-term flood protection for the Stockton community. The test demonstrated the system’s readiness to perform under real-world storm conditions, a crucial step in enhancing regional resilience.
Long-Term Collaboration and Engineering Support
HDR has been involved in the project since 2008, providing engineering design services and ongoing construction-phase support. The successful test reflects nearly two decades of coordinated planning, technical precision, and sustained interagency collaboration.
Strengthening Flood Protection and Water Infrastructure
The Smith Canal Gate is a key component of Stockton’s broader flood risk reduction strategy. By helping regulate water levels and mitigate storm surge impacts, the project reinforces critical water infrastructure designed to safeguard residents, businesses, and public assets.
This milestone underscores the importance of long-term investment in resilient infrastructure—ensuring communities are better prepared to face increasingly complex climate and flood challenges.
