A Pavilion That Translates Climate Into Design

Studio Other Spaces’ Vertical Panorama Pavilion, completed in 2022, demonstrates how architecture can visualise climate and context. The pavilion features a 14.5-metre circular glass canopy and a central oculus oriented toward the northern sky, offering an immersive spatial encounter shaped by environmental data.

    Turning Climate Patterns Into Architecture

Located in the Sonoma Valley, the pavilion was conceived as an artistic response to the region’s atmospheric conditions. Its design translates climate elements—such as solar movement, wind direction, temperature variations and humidity levels—into a structured chromatic composition, allowing visitors to experience environmental rhythms through form and colour.

Operational Details: Material Expression and Spatial Impact

The canopy comprises 832 laminated glass panels arranged in 24 translucent and transparent hues, creating a gradient that mirrors the landscape’s natural palette. The structure’s circular geometry and central opening orient visitors upward, fostering contemplation of the sky and its shifting light. The pavilion serves as a setting for wine tastings, events and cultural programmes, highlighting its functional versatility.

Economic Impact: Enhancing Cultural and Tourism Value

By integrating art and architecture into a vineyard setting, the pavilion strengthens the site’s experiential appeal and attracts visitors seeking immersive cultural and natural encounters. The project enhances local tourism offerings and supports regional economic activity linked to hospitality and viticulture.

Strategic Significance: A Model for Data-Driven Environmental Design

The Vertical Panorama Pavilion illustrates how data-driven design can deepen the relationship between architecture and nature. By visually interpreting climatic conditions, the project sets a precedent for context-responsive structures that elevate environmental awareness while enriching cultural spaces.
