A new chapter in healthcare education is emerging beneath The University of Arizona’s Health Sciences Innovation Building (HSIB). In a collaborative effort, Kitchell, CO Architects, and Swaim Associates LTD AIA have redesigned 10,000 square feet below HSIB into a state-of-the-art instructional environment that elevates clinical learning and interdisciplinary training.
HSIB, originally completed in 2019, is recognized as one of the university’s most advanced health education facilities. The newly completed lower-level expansion builds on its legacy, supporting the institution’s mission to prepare future healthcare leaders through immersive, technology-driven learning experiences.
Design and Operational Details
The transformation features precision-engineered curved walls, flexible AV-integrated classrooms, and reconfigurable teaching zones that support simulation-based education. The spatial layout improves flow, acoustics, and interaction—enabling a seamless transition between lectures, hands-on training, and team-based learning.
Economic and Institutional Impact
The project enhances the university’s ability to accommodate larger student cohorts and expand program offerings. With a modernized infrastructure and adaptable teaching spaces, the investment strengthens Arizona’s healthcare education pipeline, supporting workforce development for regional and national health systems.
Strategic Significance
This expansion reflects a broader shift toward future-ready healthcare education, where architecture, technology, and pedagogy converge. By integrating advanced learning environments beneath HSIB, the university is reinforcing its long-term commitment to innovation and preparing students for emerging clinical challenges.
