Perched on Ivan Hill in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, a pair of geometric structures now nearly doubles the footprint of an existing home. Designed by Warren Techentin Architecture (WTARCH), the new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) combines a greige blocky volume with a dark blue tiled cube, creating a terraced composition that interacts dynamically with the hillside landscape.
Design & Architecture:
The ADU is composed of two distinct volumes with separate exterior treatments, yet designed to work as a cohesive whole. By breaking the addition into smaller masses, WTARCH maintained a visual hierarchy with the original 1,458-square-foot residence, despite adding 1,152 square feet. The project accommodates two separate parties simultaneously, each with private bedrooms and shared living spaces at the core.
Interiors & Materials:
Inside, the spaces are unified by a neutral, minimalist palette with white walls and white oak flooring throughout. Accents include soft cadet blue millwork, aquamarine bathroom tiles, and mustard yellow couches that inject a vibrant pop of color. The interiors are sunlit, contemporary, and calm, emphasizing restraint and thoughtful color placement.
Landscape & Outdoor Amenities:
The ADU integrates with the surrounding landscape through a terraced garden of agave and low-water plantings. Outdoor amenities include a compact pool, cold plunge, dry sauna, rooftop terrace, balcony, and a shared courtyard with an outdoor kitchen, creating multiple zones for leisure and social interaction while taking in views of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Concept & Vision:
WTARCH’s approach reflects its commitment to site-responsive architecture, balancing architectural massing, landscape, and sustainable living. The result is a modern, functional, and visually striking addition that doubles the home’s size without overwhelming the hillside site.
