Herzog & de Meuron has been appointed to lead the design of Hudson Mosaic, a landmark affordable housing development in Manhattan’s Hudson Square neighborhood. Conceived as an all-electric, Passive House project, the scheme advances a progressive vision for sustainable, inclusive urban living, anchored by a large community center at its base.
The design integrates residential and civic programs into a cohesive architectural language, drawing on brick materiality, public art, and a strong street-level presence to create a building that is both contemporary and contextually grounded. Hudson Mosaic also represents a major policy milestone, becoming the first City-led development in New York to co-locate affordable housing with an NYC Parks recreation center.
Positioned as a benchmark for publicly subsidized housing, the project demonstrates how high design standards can play a central role in shaping more equitable cities. Herzog & de Meuron will act as lead design consultants, collaborating with Curtis + Ginsberg Architects as architects of record.
