This project examines Hyderabad’s six-century-old stormwater management system, increasingly threatened by rapid urbanization. Disruptions in the network disproportionately affect low-lying informal settlements, causing frequent flash floods. Researchers Ambwani Supriya and Saeb Ali Khan retrace the city’s ecological and urban history, employing memory mapping, onsite surveys, and oral histories to overcome gaps in archival records. Insights are synthesized with existing data to identify vulnerable areas and test targeted “acupuncture” interventions to reconnect and restore the fractured water network, preserving Hyderabad’s urban resilience and heritage.
Homeowners are increasingly drawn to Modern Heritage, a style coined by designers Barry and Jordan of The Brownstone Boys. It blends historical elements—like antique mirrors, vintage glassware, and restored woodwork—with contemporary furnishings and playful colors. The trend emphasizes spaces that feel personal, storied, and lived-in, honoring the past while embracing modern comfort.
Perkins Eastman’s Design Strategy team, in collaboration with One Workplace and Kansas State University, studied open-plan, free-address work environments. Funded by the 2024 ONEder Grant, their research highlights that comfort, privacy, and personal identity are key to creating “hominess.” Flexible spaces succeed when these elements balance inherent tensions. In the wake of the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January 2025, architects and design innovators are rethinking how resilient, sustainable housing can be developed in vulnerable communities. Spearheading this effort is Case Study: Adapt (CSA), a nonprofit initiative founded by Leo Seigal, CEO of interior design consultancy The Expert, and entrepreneur Dustin Bramell, whose own midcentury home in the Pacific Palisades was destroyed in the fires. CSA draws inspiration from the historic Case Study program, which revolutionized post-World War II modern housing by pairing visionary architects with experimental residential projects. The new program focuses on helping…
The U.S. interior design industry has experienced significant expansion over the past decade, but rising material costs and economic uncertainty signal a potential slowdown, according to a recent report from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). Interior design businesses generated an estimated $29.2 billion in sales in 2024, up 8% from the previous year. ASID projects continued growth, albeit at a slower pace, with sales reaching $30.9 billion in 2025 and $32.6 billion in 2026. While the number of professionals remains high at approximately 128,509 in 2025, it has slightly declined from 2024, reflecting a moderation after years of…
In a groundbreaking initiative that bridges architecture, technology, and sustainability, the Innovative Building Envelope (BIPV) research team of SUPSI – Institute of Applied Sustainability to the Built Environment (ISAAC) has unveiled an upcoming documentary series that sheds light on how photovoltaic systems are transforming contemporary architecture. The USA Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka has officially been completed, marking a striking architectural statement by Trahan Architects. Described by the firm as “a beacon for the country, celebrating the best of American ideas on the world stage,” the pavilion combines cultural symbolism, technological innovation, and sustainable design. Irish Pritzker Prize laureates Grafton Architects have completed their first U.S. building — the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation at the University of Arkansas. The mass-timber structure, designed in collaboration with Modus Studio, serves as a powerful statement on the future of sustainable academic architecture. Spanning 45,000 square feet, the four-story facility anchors the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design’s growing campus. Constructed almost entirely from Arkansas-sourced timber, it houses studios, an auditorium, seminar rooms, and an 11,000-square-foot fabrication workshop. Its bold, “chunky” timber frame, with columns up to 42 inches wide and beams spanning 50…
Perched dramatically above a 250-foot Pacific bluff, this 3,800-square-foot, three-bedroom retreat embraces the raw beauty of Big Sur’s south coast. Designed to blend seamlessly with the rugged California landscape, the home’s long, slender form mirrors the natural contours of the land, creating a dialogue between structure and setting. The residence is anchored twelve feet inland from the cliff’s edge, balancing safety with bold architectural expression through a striking cantilevered master suite that projects over the ocean. Two interlinked rectangular volumes, connected by a glass-walled library, form the home’s heart, while a green-roofed concrete wing grounds it firmly to the terrain.…
