Blue Bottle Coffee Takanawa Cafe, designed by I IN, is a compelling new coffee venue in Takanawa Gateway City, Tokyo, that reimagines everyday café rituals through a spatial narrative rooted in history and human connection. Blue Bottle Coffee—the renowned American specialty coffee brand—entrusted the Japanese design studio with a brief to create a space that reflects the cultural and historical significance of the area while offering visitors a meaningful and memorable experience. Located at a bustling urban intersection adjacent to office towers, shopping, residences, and three major train stations, the café draws inspiration from the notion of passage—the act of entering new worlds and crossing thresholds. I IN’s design frames key moments inside the café, from ordering to enjoying a drink, with symbolic “gates” that transition visitors from the outside city into a calm, reflective interior. Materials play a central role in this narrative: volcanic tuff stone is used for the service counter and benches as an homage to historic stone walls that once stood on the site, carrying the essence of history into the present.
