Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been awarded Best in Show on the Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Airports List 2025, marking a major global recognition for excellence in airport architecture and design. The award celebrates projects that elevate the built environment through innovation, sustainability, and cultural relevance.

Context: Global Recognition for Design Excellence

Prix Versailles is an internationally recognized architectural prize that honors outstanding projects across airports, commercial spaces, and public infrastructure worldwide. Being named Best in Show places Harvey Milk Terminal 1 among the most influential and forward-looking airport designs globally, reflecting a shift toward human-centered, climate-conscious travel environments.

    Design Vision and Project Leadership

Designed by Gensler in collaboration with Kuth Ranieri Joint Venture, Harvey Milk Terminal 1 represents a shared vision of redefining the modern airport experience. The project emphasizes the idea of traveling well while advancing climate-smart design, integrating sustainability with passenger comfort, operational efficiency, and architectural clarity.

    Operational and Environmental Innovation

Beyond its role as a transit hub, the terminal introduces new standards in healthy, resilient, and environmentally responsible design. Features focus on enhanced indoor air quality, daylight optimization, intuitive wayfinding, and durable materials selected for long-term performance. The terminal’s design supports both operational resilience and environmental stewardship, aligning with broader sustainability goals for future aviation infrastructure.

    Cultural and Civic Significance

Harvey Milk Terminal 1 stands as a civic landmark deeply rooted in the cultural identity of San Francisco. Named in honor of Harvey Milk, a pioneering civil rights leader, the terminal reflects the city’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and social progress. Architectural storytelling and spatial openness reinforce the terminal’s role as a gateway that represents the values of the Bay Area.

Strategic Significance for Future Airport Design

The recognition highlights how airport architecture can move beyond efficiency to become uplifting, visually inspiring, and human-centered. Harvey Milk Terminal 1 demonstrates how large-scale infrastructure projects can balance functionality with emotional and cultural resonance, setting a benchmark for airports worldwide.

    Conclusion

The Best in Show honor from Prix Versailles underscores the collaborative achievement of the entire project team in delivering a terminal that reimagines the future of air travel. Harvey Milk Terminal 1 serves as a model for how thoughtful design can elevate passenger experience while addressing climate responsibility and civic identity.
