Renowned American designer Kelly Wearstler has unveiled Side Hustle, an innovative curatorial platform designed to expand the frontiers of interdisciplinary collaboration. The initiative brings together creators from diverse domains — from sculpture, craft, and jewellery to performance, film, culinary culture, and even sport — in a bold exploration of design beyond conventional boundaries.
While “cross-disciplinary” has become a familiar term in the design world, Side Hustle redefines it as a living ecosystem of experimentation and exchange. It envisions a space where artistic disciplines collide, evolve, and reinterpret form and function, free from the constraints of commercial commissions.
The Platform
Side Hustle operates both digitally and physically. Online, it functions as an evolving archive and storytelling hub, chronicling exhibitions, artistic processes, and conceptual insights. Physically, its first manifestation takes place at Wearstler’s Beverly Hills residence, with future plans to expand into global venues.
According to Wearstler, the project stems from her studio’s long-standing engagement across creative disciplines, serving as “a space for ideas to unfold beyond the logic of client or commission.”
The Debut Exhibition
The inaugural show, “Again, Differently,” opens on October 16, 2025, within the Pool House at Wearstler’s Beverly Hills home—formerly used by the Broccoli family for private James Bond screenings. The exhibition features international artists Dozie Kanu, Joana Schneider, Mariko Makino, Nynke Koster, Sam Klemick, and Sonia Gomes, whose works reinterpret familiar materials—textiles, architectural remnants, and garments—into sculptural installations and performances.
The Digital Extension
The online platform complements the physical showcase, featuring an essay by Jeffrey Deitch, a soundtrack by Grammy-nominated DJ Kenny Beats, and behind-the-scenes insights. Rather than serving as an auxiliary experience, it demonstrates how digital media enhances the narrative of physical design.
The Significance
Side Hustle transcends categorization—neither gallery nor brand, but a living, evolving curatorial experiment. It represents a forward-thinking model for creative collaboration, positioning Wearstler at the intersection of art, design, and cultural innovation.
