Canadian studio 25:8 Architecture + Urban Design has completed Ferndale Flightdeck, a 400-square-foot extension in Ottawa shaped to evoke a bird in flight. The new addition enhances the existing residence with multipurpose spaces and a rooftop deck designed for birdwatching amid the areaโs rich ecological landscape.
A Home Inspired by Flight and Nature
Built atop an existing carport, the extension draws visual and conceptual inspiration from the motion of birds. The architects aimed to challenge conventional forms by creating a structure that appears to โsoarโ, while respecting the surrounding natural environment.
Design and Architectural Features
The linear cedar-clad volume includes a wrapping screened porch and a slanted profile that dips toward the rear garden. A dramatic โwingโ structure supports the upper floor while concealing a V-shaped column and storage for paddle boards. Clad in white cement board, the extension integrates large windows framing views of nearby fields and trees.
Interior Layout and Functional Zoning
Inside, the white-walled addition is divided into three functional zones:
- Recreation on the southern end
- Home office on the northern side
- Physical activity spaces in the middle, including a driveway basketball area below and a yoga studio above
A floor-level window connects the yoga room visually to the basketball court, while a battened sliding screen protects the glazing.
Sustainability and Ecological Integration
The roof captures rainwater and channels it to a pollinator garden featuring native plants that attract hummingbirds and chickadees. Cedar cladding enhances sustainability through carbon sequestration, while thoughtfully cut openings provide concealed views and maintain aesthetic continuity with the surrounding woodland.
Strategic Significance and Community Impact
The unconventional form has become a recognizable meeting point for neighbours heading toward local forest trails. The project also sits within a wider context of architectural activity in Ottawa, including the ongoing redevelopment of the Canadian Parliamentโs office complex by David Chipperfield and Zeidler.
