This Saturday, October 11, the City of Chicago will officially unveil Dwight H. Perkins Way, honoring the enduring architectural legacy of Dwight H. Perkins — grandfather of Perkins Eastman Co-Founder and Chairman Brad Perkins. The dedication ceremony will take place at Carl Schurz High School, one of several landmark institutions designed by Perkins in the early 20th century.
A Pioneer of Public Architecture
A central figure in the Prairie School movement, Dwight H. Perkins was instrumental in redefining public architecture’s role in civic life. During his tenure with Chicago Public Schools (1905–1910), he served as architect for over 40 public schools, many of which remain community anchors more than a century later. His approach emphasized natural light, open spaces, and social cohesion, setting a new standard for educational environments.
Operational Details: The Dedication Event
The street naming dedication will begin at 10:30 a.m., covering four blocks of Milwaukee Avenue in front of Carl Schurz High School (3601 N. Milwaukee Avenue). The event will bring together educators, city officials, and community members to celebrate Perkins’ contributions to Chicago’s architectural and educational fabric.
Cultural Impact: Preserving a Civic Legacy
Dwight Perkins’ influence extends far beyond his buildings — his work embodies a vision of accessible, community-centered design that continues to shape public architecture today. His projects balanced aesthetics with practicality, creating spaces where learning and civic engagement intersect.
Strategic Significance: A Legacy Carried Forward
Reflecting on the dedication, Brad Perkins remarked, “This is a wonderful recognition, and hopefully it connects people to the architectural history he contributed to — it’s gratifying to see him receiving growing recognition.” The event not only honors a family legacy but also reaffirms Perkins Eastman’s ongoing commitment to architecture that serves and uplifts communities.
