Gresham Smith, a leading architecture, engineering and consulting firm, has announced the appointment of Penny J. Houchens as Executive Vice President (EVP) of its Healthcare market, effective January 1, 2026. The firm reported gross revenues exceeding $355 million, positioning healthcare as one of its most significant and established practice areas.
Strengthening Leadership in Healthcare Design
With over 30 years of experience at Gresham Smith, Houchens has played a defining role in shaping the firm’s healthcare portfolio. Previously serving as Healthcare Studio Design Leader and a recognized behavioral health expert, she has consistently championed patient-centered and research-informed design strategies that enhance both patient and caregiver experiences.
In her new role, Houchens will oversee strategic growth and business development, guiding the future direction of Gresham Smith’s healthcare practice at a national level.
Research-Driven and Award-Winning Portfolio
Since joining the firm’s Jacksonville office in 2004 and relocating to Nashville in 2017, Houchens has led numerous award-winning healthcare projects. Her portfolio includes work for major healthcare systems such as UF Health, Baptist Health, and UC Health, reflecting a deep commitment to innovation, evidence-based thinking, and operational excellence.

Beyond her professional role, Houchens is actively engaged in advancing community health and industry leadership. She serves on the executive board of the American Heart Association, contributes to the Go Red for Women Executive Leadership Committee, and was a founding member of the Nashville Chapter of Women in Healthcare.
Education and Professional Credentials
Houchens holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from Western Kentucky University and is a LEED-accredited professional as well as a registered interior designer certified by NCIDQ. She will continue to be based in Gresham Smith’s Nashville office.
