HOK’s renovation of the Cummins Technical Center exemplifies how contemporary workplace design can thoughtfully respect architectural heritage while responding to today’s collaborative, technology-driven culture. Originally designed by modernist architect Harry Weese, the project preserves the building’s mid-century identity while reimagining it as a people-first environment.
A new interconnecting stair serves as the social and spatial anchor, linking two dynamic hubs that encourage movement, interaction, and informal exchange. More than 90 conference spaces—ranging from focused rooms to stadium-style settings—support diverse working styles, while soft lab zones enable seamless transitions between individual concentration and team collaboration.
Clean lines and exposed structure are complemented by warm white oak finishes, subtle brand references inspired by Paul Rand, and light-filled social spaces. The result is a flexible, inclusive workplace for over 500 engineers—one that looks forward while remaining firmly rooted in its architectural legacy.
