The Palm Springs Homeless Navigation Center is an innovative campus-style facility in Palm Springs, California, designed by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects (JFAK) to redefine how communities support people experiencing homelessness. Rather than creating a hidden shelter, the project transforms a previously underused sloping desert site into a welcoming, inclusive place that conveys dignity, community, and hope. Designboom
The center includes 80 modular transitional housing unitsโfrom efficiency studios to two-bedroom family residencesโarranged along a central promenade that reinforces visual connectivity and site legibility while preserving views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Two repurposed warehouses house supportive services such as a commercial kitchen, communal dining, laundry, case management, job training, and an Early Access Center with emergency overnight accommodation. Bright environmental graphics, warm sunrise-inspired facades on the east, and cool sunset-toned elevations on the west enhance wayfinding and create an uplifting sense of place.
