Designed by Marco Casamonti & Partners / Archea Associati, the Antinori Winery transforms a working vineyard into an architectural experience where production, landscape, and visitor circulation are seamlessly connected.
Completed in 2012, the Antinori Winery is set among the rolling vineyards of Chianti, between Florence and Siena, Italy. Designed by Marco Casamonti & Partners / Archea Associati, the project takes an architecture-led approach to integrating a large-scale wine-production facility into its natural surroundings.
Rather than standing prominently above the landscape, the winery is embedded into the hillside, allowing the building to become part of the terrain. Its vineyard-covered roof continues the natural slope of the site, creating a visual connection between the architecture and the surrounding agricultural landscape.
Architecture Shaped by the Landscape
The building’s relationship with the hillside is central to its architectural identity. Long horizontal cuts across the facade introduce natural daylight into the largely underground spaces while creating carefully controlled views toward the surrounding vineyards.
This strategy allows the winery to remain visually connected to Chianti without compromising the functional requirements of a modern production facility. The landscape effectively becomes part of the building, while the architecture provides framed perspectives of the countryside.
Gravity-Driven Wine Production
The internal organization of the winery is closely connected to its topography. The wine-making process follows a vertical, gravity-driven sequence, beginning with grape reception at the upper level and continuing downward through the production areas toward the barrel cellar.
Using gravity as part of the production process reduces the need to rely on mechanical movement between stages. At the lowest levels, the barrel cellar benefits from the naturally stable climatic conditions provided by the surrounding earth, creating an environment suited to the aging process.
The result is a production system in which architecture, engineering, and the natural characteristics of the site work together.
A Different Journey for Visitors
While wine production moves downward through the building, visitors experience the architecture through an inverse circulation path.
Their journey gradually moves upward through production areas, tasting spaces, and cultural areas, transforming a visit to the winery into a carefully choreographed spatial experience.
This movement allows visitors to encounter the building not simply as a wine-production facility, but as an architectural interpretation of the landscape and the winemaking process.
Where Architecture and Agriculture Meet
One of the defining characteristics of the Antinori Winery is the continuity between its architecture and its surroundings. The vineyard-covered roof, underground spaces, controlled openings, and material continuity allow the project to establish a strong relationship with the Chianti landscape.
The project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respond to a highly sensitive natural setting without competing with it. Instead, the building becomes an extension of the terrain, using topography, daylight, gravity, and landscape as fundamental components of its design.
A Model for Landscape-Responsive Architecture
The Antinori Winery stands as an example of how architecture can integrate complex industrial functions into a sensitive landscape while creating a meaningful experience for visitors.
By embedding the building into the hillside and organizing both production and circulation around the site’s natural characteristics, Archea Associati created a winery where architecture is not separated from the landscape—it is fundamentally shaped by it.
