Cloudscape Library, Haikou: Where Architecture Transforms Reading into an Experiential Journey

Reading has long been associated with imagination and introspection. At the Cloudscape Library in Haikou, China, this intellectual journey is translated into built form. Designed by MAD Architects, the library redefines the act of reading by merging architecture with landscape, creating a spatial experience that is as fluid and contemplative as the ideas it shelters.

Architecture Between Land and Sea

Situated along Haikou’s shoreline, the Cloudscape Library occupies a liminal space between land and ocean. Its placement reinforces a sense of transition and pause, encouraging visitors to slow down and reflect. The building appears to float above the coast, echoing the transient nature of clouds and the rhythm of the surrounding seascape.

Design and Spatial Experience

The structure is defined by soft, flowing concrete forms punctuated by circular openings that guide natural light through the interior. These apertures shape shadow, air movement, and atmosphere, dissolving conventional boundaries between walls and ceilings. Pathways curve organically, unfolding like a narrative and reinforcing architecture as a lived experience rather than a static object.

Materiality and Emotional Impact

Although constructed from concrete, the building conveys an unexpected softness. The material is treated almost as a liquid, capturing movement and lightness while maintaining structural integrity.
